While the summer in Berlin keeps us waiting, Playtime Berlin is already busy presenting us with the hottest and most beautiful pieces for next summer. Based in the heart of our capital in the Palazzo d’Italia, not far from the Brandenburg Gate, 124 international children’s labels show off their latest summer collections. The venue’s light and airy halls have turned into a kids’ paradise, showcasing everything that children love: from outerwear, underwear and accessories to toys and interiors, it’s all here!
Once again the show’s organizer Playology shows an outstanding taste for style, design and trends. Everything at the show unites according to the motto “live together” – “gone are the times of individualism, long live solidarity”. The themes are therefore ‘do it yourself’ instead of mass production, repairing rather than buying and sharing and exchanging in order to pass on experience. Ideals, we from Pepe&Nika highly support! Playtime Berlin’s kickoff presented itself therefore as a successful première and inspires us with a perfect blend of renowned labels, cool trendsetters and emerging creative newcomers.
One thing is particularly noteworthy by the way: The summer of 2018 is green! Many of the brands present themselves with sustainable, eco friendly clothing and fair trade clothing, recycled materials, GOTs certified cotton materials and quality seals for their social production sites.
KAVAT – A family-run Business with Heart and Soul
“There is no other way!” Magnus Ericson, the CEO of KAVAT, claims. Ericson is concerned with choosing the ecologically friendly path: resource-saving production and the recycling of materials. For more than 70 years the family business has been active in the children’s shoe business and still manages to capture the spirit of the age. KAVAT was the first shoe company in the world to be awarded the EU Ecolabel seal of approval. We were taken with the cool bath sandals that should be available in four colors next summer.

LULALAND – Eco friendly Clothing with Style
LULALAND managed to impress us already in January at the Playtime in Paris when we spotted them in the newcomer area. Back then we were amazed by their bright prints, extraordinary cuts and, above all, the expressive and loving charisma of LULALAND’s designer Lula. How could it be different in Berlin?! This time round LULALAND presented a wide range of colors, shapes and prints in their SS18 collection: Nepalese-themed skirts in neon tones, cubic shapes and casual cuts, as well as girlish light summer skirts for glamorous garden parties.

KiSSE – PRINTS by KIDS (Newcomer)
The newcomer brand KiSSE proves that children are simply the best designers! PRINTS by KIDS is the slogan of the Danish-Spanish kids label. For more than a year Christina Altuna, the designer and founder of KiSSE has been printing the drawings of her three children onto her labels pieces. Her idea is the following: Why collect the many drawings and paint exercises of one’s children just to put them in a closet, rather than bringing them to life? Easy as pie thought Christina and inspires henceforth our mummy hearts with colorful naive art on eco friendly clothing fabrics!

barn of monkeys – High Fashion for Children (Newcomer)
Why should only adults be able to enjoy refined design pieces? That is what designer David Pinto thought when founding his label. Pinto showed us one of his favorite pieces from the upcoming collection, made for 2 to 16 year-olds. We were impressed by the pieces’ exceptional shapes and cuts that are still quite wearable and comfortable, often even GOTs certified. The label has only been six months on the market but captures the spirit of these times, we believe. Wait for it, you will hear and see more of barn of monkeys in the future!

TBC – Eco friendly clothing Fairtrade Nightwear for Young and Old
Set in modern, Scandinavian design, The Bright Company (TBC)’s awesome prints caught our eyes at the show. TBC’s designer, Alienor Falconer, knows very well how to amaze parents and children alike. That is why they don’t have different collections for different age groups. And why should they?! The unisex bedlinen and loungewear suits everyone – no matter how big or small. On top of that the super-soft GOTs certified cotton fabrics without any chemical treatment assure a good night’s rest! Sleep well, is all we can add!

We leave the future-oriented Playtime Berlin kick-off première in optimistic spirits and feel like shouting it out loud: Yes, it all exists: sustainable fashion labels and eco-friendly clothing with style and colorful designs. It is flashy, stylish and colorful as with LULALAND or minimalistic and beautiful as The Bright Company’s nightwear. What matters is, it’s here and it’s wonderful!
Playtime Berlin however was not only a show for children’s fashion. We also discovered great interior items and toys for you: Beautiful handmade cuddly toys from Austria and Montessori furniture for each and every furnishing style. Find out more soon…
